Timeshare is described as a business media site for sharing presentations, documents and pdf portfolios
FEATURES: participants can join groups about various topics, sync. audio with your slides, find presentations, create MUSICAL PRESENTATIONS & SLIDETOONS, make personal and professional friends and potentially participate in group events, vote in contests and ADD SLIDESHARE WIDGETS TO BLOGS & WEBSITES
Amazingly the site claims to have 23MILLION MONTLY VISITORS and interestingly the two office addresses are in San Fransisco and New Dehli.
When I tried to view ECHAR's presentation I couldn't because I have to create an account first.
Sounds interesting. You would have to be motivated to join slideshare - if at work you had to make many slideshows it would be handy.
COMMENTS
With offices in U.S. and India I wonder whether advertisements will eventuate as a feature to make money to finance the "offices"

Test drive B ZOHO & GOOGLE DOCS

Well here I am with the time to have finished test drive 2A and start 2B! a very rare window of time indeed....
PERSONAL
Commoncraft loves this free software "Google docs rock" I can immediately see great potential for the sort of scenario described - where collaboration is necessary - a bit like a wiki. To get people to join in is initially quite an awareness raising and nagging task - as I found out when I created my first wiki for a social group and started persuading techniques to get everyone to participate.
PROFESSIONAL

This is a non issue - only invited participants have access
Summary:
Documents that need collaboration in teamwork are sent for editing to the internet. This replaces the need for many email attacments with the various versians cluttering up an editors inbox.
Instead of attaching a document to an email, the email address is attached to a document. As the document and its versions will be online they can be accessed anywhere, on any computer.
Procedure for Google docs
Easy steps. An account is created on the Google docs homepage. The document is uploaded and created into an online versian. Writers are invited to edit the latest draft by clicking SHARE to get a list of email addresses - Google docs emails these 'COLLABORATORS' who get a link to open the doc and start editing. The last stage is where the editor completes the last draft. All versians are also available.
Not just documents
Spreadsheets and presentations can also be uploaded to Google docs for easy collaboration. Sharing presentations using SLIDESHARE can be done publicly and privately -

Well, here's starting the last of part A of Test drive Licence 2 - must be the last person to finish it!

SOCIAL BOOKMARKING - Basically it's about developing traditional bookmarks tied to one computer into a method that allows them to be accessed from anywhere.
The term TAGGING means creating a categorisation which allows you, like an unstructured LCSH, to associate keywords with online content like webpages, pictures etc.
Since there are a mind boggling 15 billion web pages the old way of bookmarking them is now obselete - the social bookmarking DOESN'T USE A BROWSER. Instead it uses an SB SITE - del.ic.ious is a popular one.
Common Craft explains the social aspect - the bit they would like the best - to be social and share with colleagues so that everyone can benefit from each other's choice of sites. This sort of networking is essential where professionals need an information network without actually meeting each other.
PROCEDURES
At the social bookmarking site you have chosen it is necessary to add a couple of important buttons to your browser which includes the tag process. Once that is achieved it is a matter of finding bookmarking sites with tags and then be social and share them.
PROS AND CONS
Seems all good. A little effort for a lot of benefit particularly for a specialised professional like a language or TESOL teacher. I found the declicious tasty book marks at the Sutherland Shire library too general and the subject based tag cloud from the National Library to be overwhelmingly huge.Throwing everything in couldn't be a good idea.
However, searching the Cleveland Public Library bookmarks under the nasty subject tag of GRAMMAR I found a brillian site for high school students - nice little interactive site with a growling bear.
Maybe bookmarking does work for public libraries which will always have a vast number of subjects.

Looking at the SLQ website this morning I noticed that the John Oxley blog has been replaced by a NEWSFEED column - this certainly alerted me to explore the RSS format.
PROFESSIONAL
Heard recently from a public servant friend that her IT dept. didn't like blogs because of some perceived firewall problem. Here at SLQ many blogs are essential to information sharing and the newsfeed supplies the latest news from blogs - for example John Oxley.
When I entered the AT OUR TABLE blog at the SLQ website the RSS feed was clearly positioned at the top right hand side and quaintly called RSS food.
As soon as I entered the newsfeed in the website there was a column headed "Syndicating our headlines" with the following explanation:
The State Library's web feeds are freely available for anyone wishing to display our headlines on their own website. There are no restrictions, but we ask that you display headlines only.
PROS
Obviously newsfeeds are the flavour of the month at SLQ - I think that it is useful to get the latest currnet info. from blogs in one spot instead of having to visit the different blogs.
SLQ is promoting the concept on its website with "Need some help with RSS?" so that the public get immediate and useful awareness training.
FREE NEWSFEED READERS
Not everyone will have a feedreader available on their browser and free downloadable software options can be installed on a p.c.

RSS FEEDS
Hi Blog,
I've just sent a posting on RSS feeds which doesn't seem to have arrived in my blog.
Personal - I've joined BLOGLINES and then couldn't find a RSS icon in my selected websites - I'll ask around
Professional - Interesting and efficient way to receive relevent info. from chosen websites and blogs. Really Simple Syndication would be useful for specific library news.
I'm keeping this short as my last longer posting failed to arrive.
Over and out!! now I realise I saved my post but didn't publish it.

7th Post - Testdrive 4 Social networking
Hi Blog,
PERSONAL: here I am again at the end of my short working week and staying back to blog - I enjoyed the Commoncraft video as usual - a great start to looking at the latest testdrive despite the apalling accent - this time much shorter but very good and sharp. TWITTER has amazing ramifications - for politics that is, and maybe libraries too but that still has to be proved - and the THESIS I looked at the other week that wasn't about wikis it was about TWITTER AND CATALOGUING/THE CATALOGUE - not that I've really read it but I will - to prove to myself that the astounding success political parties have created with twitter also applies to libraries - maybe not yet ...
The EXPLOSIAN talked about, by organising tweets and making them searchable is proved by the events in IRAN - the opposition used twitter to organise their huge massive street rallies whilst the government was trying to shut down all social network sites - when Twitter was going to shut down for an afternoon for housekeeping they begged it not to because they relied on it totally for their communication
PROFESSIONAL: Libraries use of social network sites
IFLA's use of FACEBOOK:
they supply a website which interestingly is an old archived one which says "check back later" Maybe Facebook has taken over the role of providing content and discussion.
ALIA'S USE OF NING:
For their symposium using FACEBOOK and ninging - noticed the GOOGLE ADS at the right hand side
Networking for library workers sounds good. "UNDERGOING MAINTENANCE" was prominent - a work in progress.
GAMING NING:
An important public library issue - gaming learning - hard to see if you don't actually join in - a few members which is good and growing - "2 new members"
UQ - SEARCHING THE CATALOGUE VIA FACEBOOK:
Well, not really huge success yet .... but maybe potential ... has 5 monthly users which is a good start - presume they are students or maybe staff. I visited their wall and no recent posts , reviews or discussion - BUT MAYBE SOON! it's all set up ready to go
NON LIBRARY USE:
BIFF'S USE OF MYSPACE
This was the best looking site, well designed, very colourful - the VODCASTS using UTUBE were pretty blurred and the voices indistinct - but maybe that is from my end. Had clear info. on opening nights and volunteers.
All in all the explosian seems to have happened outside library arenas - in the political hotspot of the world. But very much a work in progress and libraries have been quick to use TWITTER - now if only I had the time to read that thesis!!!.... on twitter and cataloguing ..... at twit treat to come... over and out for no. 4

WIKIS
Well blog, it's happened again. Another nouveau idea for me to apply to my personal life and professional library successes as well- of course (the main idea for this training!)
Personal:
Watching the video with it's cool little drawings made me realise that my chaotic Ma Jong group could be tamed by me opening up a wiki - then we might know when and who will be turning up every month. Quite amazing - everyone knows except me? maybe not .... no-one else has come up with the idea ..
Professional:
LIBRARY SUCCESS WIKI was impressive - at first it seemed overwhelming but when I saw the alphabetized list of categories I started to get interested - then I chose the GAMING topic and liked the neat, concise and informative way it was organised - every entry was the same with no verbosity, just the opposite - name, type and size of library, gaming types, platforms and a contact. THIS IS SO USEFUL!!
WIKIFY THE OPAC
This was certainly mind boggling - how could this happen? how could it be useful? and the entry that presented itself was indeed vast - but interesting. Would the St Joseph County Public Library have the time for an editor?
NATIONAL LIBRARY LIBRARY LABS
The policy is to invite people to comment on issues in this wiki, but if people want to edit or add info. they have to register.
They are involving an important project relating to vendor purchasing in this wiki and hope to 'INFLUENCE CURRENT INTEGRATED LIBRARY SYSTEM VENDOR PRODUCTS' and 'GUIDE FUTURE LIBRARY SYSTEM IMPLEMENTATIONS'
Open Library Environment (OLE) Project
So there is a serious international aspect to National Library's wiki. A communication that would be lots cheaper than a conference - or maybe will lead to one.
Thats all for today, my last working day for the week. I'm getting training and don't have to go to Southbank or sit for an hour listening to something I don't have time to listen to!! cheers blog
